Funding Your Tuition Fees and Future-Proofing For Your Loved Ones
Advanced learner loans – A Summary
If you are 19 or above, you could make use of the Advanced Learn Loan that is funded through the Students Loans Company. You can undertake approved qualifications from levels 3 to level 6 with a college or training provider to make use of the loan system which gives financial support to individuals for tuition costs, similar to the support given for higher education.
“The availability of loans at level 3 for 19 to 23 year olds does not replace an individual’s legal entitlement for full funding for a first full level 3 qualification and a subsequent high value level 3 qualification, as part of the High value courses for school and college leavers: a one-year offer for 18 and 19-year-olds.” https://www.gov.uk/guidance/24-advanced-learning-loans-an-overview

How does it get paid?
The advanced learner loan is directly paid to the college or training provider on behalf of an individual. There are no credit checks, so any individual who meets the criteria will be able to apply for a loan regardless of their employment or financial status.
You will need to meet certain criteria to be eligible for the Advanced Learner Loan, it will depend on your:
- College/ Training provider
- Nationality/ residency status
You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course.
You course must be:
- A level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification, for example A levels or graduate certificate
- At an approved college or training provider in England
You can ask us if you’re not sure and we’ll check if your course is eligible and meets the criteria.
Your nationality or residency status
In most cases, all the following must apply.
- be living in the UK on the first day of your course
- be a UK national or have ‘settled status’ (this means there are no restrictions on how long you can stay)
- have been living in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man for 3 years before starting your course
If you have settled status because you are a victim of domestic violence, you do not need to have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for 3 years.
